FLEXINDUSTRIES, FLEX4FACT, and TRINEFLEX unite to tackle challenges in digitalization, energy flexibility, and process optimization.
FLEXINDUSTRIES, in collaboration with sister projects FLEX4FACT and TRINEFLEX, hosted a dynamic workshop titled “Energy Transition for Industrial Processes: The Role of Digitalization, Process Optimization, and Energy Flexibility.” This interactive event brought together stakeholders from industry, research, and project consortia to discuss barriers and opportunities for energy transition within energy-intensive industries.
Participants explored three core themes: digitalization, energy flexibility, and process optimization through focused discussions in breakout groups.
Digitalization
Stakeholders highlighted the transformative potential of digital technologies such as IoT, digital twins, and advanced algorithms in improving energy efficiency and real-time monitoring. However, challenges like high upfront costs, legacy IT systems, and regulatory hurdles remain prevalent. The workshop underscored the need for stronger policies and iterative collaboration with end-users to enable adoption.
Energy Flexibility
Discussions centered on strategies to enhance energy flexibility through optimized scheduling, integration of energy storage systems, and market innovations. Participants identified challenges such as scaling flexibility solutions, regulatory complexities, and a need for education to shift operator mindsets. Insights from successful applications in projects like TRINEFLEX and FLEX4FACT demonstrated pathways for unlocking untapped flexibility.
Process Optimization
The group explored how optimization can reduce emissions, enhance flexibility, and lower costs in industrial processes. Key barriers included high investment needs, regulatory inconsistencies, and interruptions required for implementation. Future opportunities include leveraging European incentives and integrating digital tools like product footprints and datasets for cross-industry collaboration.
The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to advance the energy transition by overcoming these barriers. Upcoming collaborative sessions among the three projects will build on these discussions to further refine solutions and strategies.
