Optimization and Forecasting for Industrial Flexibility: From Algorithms to Demonstrations

5th FLEXIndustries webinar explored how advanced forecasting, optimisation and anomaly-detection tools enable smarter decision-making across industrial energy systems

On 20 November 2025, FLEXIndustries hosted its 5th webinar, titled “Optimization and Forecasting for Industrial Flexibility: From Algorithms to Demonstrations”, led by Dr. Vasileios Tatsis from CERTH/ITI. The session focused on how data-driven intelligence can support industries in improving flexibility, reducing operational costs and enhancing resilience.

The webinar provided an overview of the suite of digital solutions developed within FLEXIndustries. These include: electricity and natural-gas price forecasting using machine-learning models trained on European market data; demand forecasting based on linear regression, clustering and LSTM neural networks; and predictive-maintenance anomaly-detection modules capable of identifying abnormal patterns through supervised and unsupervised classifiers.

Dr. Tatsis also presented multi-objective optimisation tools supporting day-ahead planning to minimise costs and emissions, penalty-mitigation mechanisms for peak-power management, and a correlation-analysis framework for identifying the process variables that most influence industrial performance. Examples from project pilots demonstrated how these tools enable plants to anticipate price fluctuations, optimise energy consumption schedules, mitigate imbalance penalties and improve operational reliability.

The session concluded with an overview of the project’s LCA/LCC tool, developed to help industries assess the environmental and economic impact of efficiency measures through a user-friendly interface.
