At the 11th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems in Copenhagen, FBK will showcase how industrial waste heat recovery supports decarbonisation and district heating.
Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), a partner of the FLEXIndustries project, will participate in the 11th International Conference on Smart Energy Systems, taking place in Copenhagen on 16–17 September 2025. The annual event brings together leading experts, researchers, and industry representatives to discuss the latest advancements in smart energy systems, sector integration, and the path toward a carbon-neutral society.
FBK will present the work carried out at the Suanfarma Italia demo site, titled “From Waste to Worth: Integrating a Double-Effect Heat Pump in a Pharmaceutical Industry for Process Cooling & District Heating”. The presentation highlights the deployment of a 1.2 MW high-temperature heat pump (HTHP) designed to provide both cooling at 10 °C for pharmaceutical production and heating at 93 °C for the local district heating network.
Dynamic modelling and simulation conducted by FBK, in collaboration with HIREF, demonstrate the potential to deliver 2.9 GWh/year of cooling to Suanfarma and 3.9 GWh/year of heat to the Rovereto district heating network, contributing to an estimated 3,000 tons of CO₂ emissions reduction annually.
